NEON + LIGHT + MOTION
A selection of works integrating combinations of neon, light or motion; elements featured throughout the decades as indicators of levity, ecstasy and born of our love of the underbelly of city life, fairgrounds and theatre.
Our two, all-singing all-dancing modified bumper cars ‘THE SILVER DREAM MESSAGE MACHINE [HANG ON TO YER HAT, WE’RE IN FOR A BUMPY RIDE!]’ + ‘THE BIG GREEN MYTH MACHINE [SCREAM LOUDER, IF YOU WANT TO GO FASTER]’
Originally created in 2021 for the exhibition ‘Pull Up To My Bumper’ in Waterloo, curated by Westbank Gallery, this pair featured alongside twenty other modified bumper cars, with artists taking these iconic objects; refurbishing and engineering them into totally re-purposed art installations.
What’s it all about?
Bumper Car One: A consumptive economy reveals itself to be the most basic, the only ‘economy’ of a global market…CONSUME…resources, stuff and more stuff, more more more, take, take…+ Bumper Car Two: When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, the last stream poisoned, only then will you realise that you can’t eat money.
Further works involving all our favourite things, neon, ‘homecraft’ cake decorating techniques, reclaimed and modified found objects, mould-making and casting, colour and light. Complex craftsmanship and the use of multiple materials covering infinitely more complex thematic areas of Life, Love, Sex, Politics, Comedy, Tragedy and the Stuff we’re all made of, Flesh, Heart and Soul.
