ELEMENTAL EFFIGIES
A development of Heroes Of Isolation [prev. The Lockdown Army] and Erosion Apostles [2020-22] began in late 2022 with a freestanding collection of works, Elemental Effigies.
This development repositions the swaddled and abstracted multiple-figure previously contained by an island environment or an almost coffin-like drawer, allowing this symbol to become the ‘canvas’ to explore embedded material and additional material options.
The focus concerns the exploration of the singular human aspect and impact on both local and global environments.
Man, Myth, Machine.
Where Man=Human [All Of Us]
Where Myth=Past [Knowledge]
Where Machine= Industry [And Technology]
As before, these are produced as multiples but not constrained by the concept of editions, rather each becomes its’ own entity, its’ own emotional and emotive response, clothed in a range of habits born of found objects and materials. Each also holds a relationship and dialogue with other members of the group.
HEROES OF ISOLATION
An expansive series of 21 works originating during the global lockdown of 2020, developing throughout 2021/22. The members of this series are united by the repetition of a singular motif, a cast of a New Orleans Mardi Gras sugar baby, a symbol representing the ‘Everyman’. Previously titled: The Lockdown Army.
The themes explored throughout this series concern the ever expanding range of reactions and emotions; hysteria, fear, uncertainty, loneliness, confusion that became more apparent as the pandemic made progression in an ever more complex and distressing global scenario. Each element locked-in or boxed-in its own ‘island’ environment is a visual marker to the isolation most of us have been touched by throughout the long months from March 2020 to the present. The focus on head and belly areas highlight the capacity for confusion and anxiety.
